Bad news for Mac users who rely on Facebook Messenger: Meta is discontinuing its Messenger app for macOS, and it will stop working completely within the next 60 days.

According to a newly published support page, Messenger for Mac is being fully deprecated, meaning users won’t be able to log in once the shutdown period ends. New users can no longer download the app from the Mac App Store, and existing users will soon receive in-app notifications warning them of the change.
What This Means

After the 60-day period, the Messenger desktop app will no longer function at all. When users attempt to log in, they’ll be automatically redirected to the Messenger experience on the Facebook website.

Meta hasn’t provided a clear reason for the decision, though the company appears to be consolidating its messaging experiences under the web platform.
What You Should Do

If you use Messenger on your Mac, Meta recommends enabling Secure Storage in the app and setting up a PIN. This ensures your chat history is safely saved before you transition to using Messenger on the web.

Once the 60 days are up, the desktop app will be blocked from access completely, and Meta encourages users to delete it from their devices.

How Users Are Reacting

The move has sparked mixed reactions from users who favored the convenience of a standalone desktop app. For now, the only way to chat on a Mac will be through the Facebook website — unless Meta decides to release an updated version in the future.
