Meta is rolling out a group chats feature to its social platform Threads, marking another step forward in turning the app into a more social and interactive space. With this update, users can now send messages to multiple people in a single chat instead of just one-on-one direct messages — a feature that was only added earlier in June.
Threads users can now create groups of up to 50 members, allowing for richer, community-style conversations. To maintain safety and prevent misuse, only people who already follow the user can be added to a group chat. Meta says the addition is designed to make it “easier to connect, share, and dive deeper into the topics you love.”
Each group can be given a custom name, helping participants identify ongoing discussions — much like how Facebook Messenger handles group conversations. This personalization makes organizing topic-based or interest-focused chats much easier.
According to Meta spokesperson Alec Booker, the feature is rolling out globally, with the exception of the UK and Australia. Booker added that Meta is actively working to expand group chat availability to those regions “as quickly as possible.”
Meta has also teased upcoming improvements, including the ability to invite others via shared links, making it simpler to bring new members into existing groups without manually adding them one by one.
In addition to group chats, Threads is expanding its entire messaging toolkit across the European Union, offering new privacy controls, a hidden folder for filtered messages, media sharing options, and updated security settings. These features are expected to become available to EU users within the next few days.
Meta reiterated its commitment to user feedback, saying it will continue refining Threads’ messaging experience as it evolves into a more complete communication platform.
